Re-Establishment of the Old

The project investigates how digital processes can contribute to a re-establishment of the old woodblock printing method in a modern, contemporary context with a commercial potential. The aesthetics found in the Analogue printing method, woodblock printing, is unique and cannot be found elsewhere. It is therefore relevant to investigate how the potential of the old technique can be used in a contemporary context. CNC Routers give the textile designer a new found opportunity to make woodblocks for printing. And involving digital printing adds opportunities in terms of scale, color and production. Historically the revealing of the repeat created by the block has been one of biggest weaknesses for the woodblock printing method. In an attempt to turn this attribute into an advantage instead, I emphasise the grid and the relations appearing in the meeting of the blocks.

Furthermore the textiles are printed on both sides to avoid having a front and a back. When the light hits the textiles, the ornamentation of each sides interact with each other and creates a sensual experience in which there is a contrast between the saturated print and the more blurry print revealing itself from the opposite side.
