Fragmented Focus’

The submitted works are part of the textile series‚ fragmented focus‘ that aims to find a way to connect artisan and industrial textile techniques without losing its material complexity nor its narrative character. The series juxtaposes hand-tyed and handwoven ikat pieces with fabrics that have been designed for and woven with an automatic jacquard loom. Both categories of fabric share a common aesthetic and similar patterns – while the technical design, is very different. This project is not aiming to replace elaborate artisan techniques with fast industrial manufacturing options but to create new textile narratives through rethinking conventional making processes. How can ancient knowledge be celebrated and applied to a contemporary context? How do manual and digital techniques intertwine and complement each other? The merging of both can create sustainable textile values, if the previous is respectfully quoted and further developed in an experimental and thoughtful way.
